IGCP 683 was funded by UNESCO/IUGS through the International Geoscience Program (https://www.unesco.org/en/iggp/igcp).
The project was initiated in 2020 but received no funding in 2020 or 2021 because COVID made it impossible to move forward with project activities as anticipated. Hence the project received UNESCO/IUGS funding in 2022, 2023, and 2024, totaling US$23,000.
Those funds were used to support the website (now closed) and to fund participation in annual field meetings by mainly North African students and young professionals, with emphasis on encouraging female participants.
We also received a small grant from a Canadian project participant. These funds enabled two additional students to attend the annual meeting in Morocco in October 2024.
Other participants in the project used their own sources of funding to support their participation, including personal funds as necessary.
We are grateful to UNESCO/IUGS for supporting this project, which was successful in its goals of furthering scientific communications and collaborations among geoscientists working on correlations among eastern North America, northwest Africa, and Europe. We were able to hold sessions at international conferences and built an engaged community around the project theme.
Thanks to the generosity of the Atlantic Geoscience Society (https://atlanticgeosciencesociety.ca/), we are able to preserve many of the outcomes of our project on this archival website.
